Functional Medicine FAQs

What is functional medicine?

Functional medicine is a personalized, systems-based approach to healthcare focused on identifying and addressing the root causes of disease, rather than just treating symptoms.

How is functional medicine different from traditional medicine?

While traditional medicine often manages conditions and symptoms with medications or procedures, functional medicine aims to uncover and resolve underlying contributors to illness—such as nutrition, lifestyle, genetics, and environment—with highly individualized care.

What conditions does functional medicine commonly treat?

Functional medicine addresses a wide range of chronic conditions, including digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, autoimmune diseases, allergies, mental health concerns, metabolic disorders, and more.

What should I expect during my first visit?

Your initial appointment is 90 minutes and covers an in-depth health history, physical exam, review of current concerns, lab planning, and supplement guidance. The goal is to understand the whole picture of your health and begin crafting your personalized roadmap.

Do you work with my primary care doctor or specialists?

Yes. Functional medicine practitioners often collaborate with your broader care team to ensure a cohesive, well-rounded approach to your health.

Are the treatments evidence-based?

Yes. Functional medicine uses science-backed diagnostics, testing, and therapies. While many recommendations—like nutrition and lifestyle changes—are well-studied, some supplements or integrative therapies may be considered complementary.

Will my insurance cover functional medicine visits?

Coverage can vary. Some lab tests and diagnostics may be covered, but most functional medicine services are not included under standard insurance plans. Many practices operate on a fee-for-service model. Learn more about our pricing.

How long does a functional medicine program typically last?

It depends on your health goals, condition complexity, and how your body responds to treatment. Some patients see improvement within weeks; others may require longer-term support.

Can I combine functional medicine with my current medications and treatments?

Absolutely. Functional medicine often works alongside conventional treatments. We tailor our recommendations to support your overall health while integrating safely with current prescriptions or therapies.

How do I find a qualified functional medicine provider?

Look for practitioners certified by the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) or other reputable organizations. Always ask about qualifications, experience, and approach to ensure a good fit for your needs.

Medicare covers only spinal manipulation (chiropractic adjustments) and does not pay for exams, X-rays, therapies, or rehabilitation services provided by chiropractors. ChiroHealthUSA is an excellent way to obtain discounted pricing on services Medicare does not cover.

What payment options are available for high-deductible plans, military personnel, or self-pay patients?

ChiroHealthUSA is a great alternative for patients with high-deductible insurance plans, Medicare, military families, or those paying out-of-pocket. This membership program ($49/Year) provides access to capped, discounted rates for all covered chiropractic services at Synergy Health.

Dry needling is no longer covered by any commercial insurance plans when performed by a chiropractor or physical therapist (coverage is limited to MDs and DOs). At Synergy Health, dry needling is a cash-charge service, but it can be bundled affordably for ChiroHealthUSA members.

What can I expect during my first chiropractic visit?

Your initial visit includes a detailed history, focused physical examination, movement assessment, and personalized treatment plan. Treatment may include manual adjustments, soft tissue therapies, and therapeutic exercise.

At Synergy Health, appointments are intentionally longer than average to ensure you receive thorough, personalized care. New patient visits typically last 60 minutes, while follow-up appointments are about 30 minutes.
